SGB CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS PREVIEW

Monday July 17, 2017
Friday night will see the Oaktree Arena host their second SGB Major Event of the season, the inaugural SGB Championship Pairs meeting.

Newly branded for 2017, the SGB Championship, the 2nd tier of speedway in the UK, stages its first Major Event meeting of the season, which brings together two of the top three available riders from each of the 10 Championship teams as they go head-to-head for the prestigious Pairs crown.

The format of the meeting will see the 10 teams compete in 2 groups of 5 team each (see below), with each team will ride against every other team in their group (4 rides each) with the top 2 teams in each group progressing to the sudden death semi-finals. The winners of each semi-final will then race in a winner-takes-all Grand Final, while the respective Semi-final losers will race-off for third place.

With the event’s unique scoring system of 4-3-2-0, it means that to finish 2nd and 3rd as a partnership gives greater reward than a pairing providing the heat winner but with his race-partner finishing last, so being aware of your team-partner’s position during the race is of paramount importance throughout.

Somerset were the last winners of the event in 2016 under its previous incarnation as the Premier League Pairs, a title they also won in 2013, but with their elevation into the top flight of UK speedway for 2017, the Rebels are not eligible to compete in this year’s meeting, but that does not mean that there will be no Somerset interest on the night for the home fans to enjoy, as team manager Garry May explains;

“Although Somerset are not involved in the meeting, there are a number of our current side taking part for their respective Championship teams, so there will still be plenty of interest on the night for Somerset fans to enjoy.”

“It will be a bit strange for me to be there on the night but to not actually be involved as a team manager, so it’ll be interesting for me to be watching things from the side-lines!”

“Looking at the respective line-up’s, it is going to take a brave person to pick a winner from the ten teams taking part, with team riding being the name of the game while avoiding those dreading last places.”

“The Oaktree Arena is always packed for the Pairs meeting, with fans from all over the UK making their way to Somerset for one of the highlights of the domestic speedway calendar, and I am sure that this year will be no exception.”

“So the stage is set for what promises to be another excellent night of top quality speedway action for those fans to enjoy.”
