With sides in the SGB Premiership on an enforced week-long break due to the Speedway World Cup which is currently taking the place, the ‘Cases’ Somerset Rebels have taken the opportunity to give some of the young up and coming talent the chance to shine when a Somerset Select septet take on National League side Isle of Wight Warriors at the Oaktree Arena on Friday (7th) night.

The Somerset side will be drawn from riders who are currently competing in the National League, the third tier of speedway in the UK, though there will be a couple of familiar names and faces within the line-up.

Two riders in the Rebels Select side who have Somerset connections are Zach Wajtknecht, who rode for the Rebels in 2016 before injury brought a premature end to his season, and Henry Atkins, who for many years was the Somerset team mascot, but is now enjoying an excellent debut season with the Plymouth Devils.

As well as 16 year-old Atkins, there are two other Plymouth riders in the Somerset side, namely Adam Roynon, a recent signing by the Devils, and reserve Callum Walker, the remainder of the Somerset Select septet being completed by Ryan Terry-Daley, Luke Priest, and another youngster who is just setting out in the speedway world, Anders Rowe, who made an impressive appearance at the Oaktree Arena a few weeks ago with riding for Kent in a Southern Development League match against Exeter.

As for the Isle of Wight, they are bolstered by the inclusion of guest Ben Morley, but other than that, they bring their full septet to the Oaktree Arena for what promises to be an intriguing match for the fans to enjoy, though there is a doubt about their number 1, Ben Wilson, who suffered a leg injury in the Warriors match at Kent last night.

The Somerset promotion have reduced their admission prices for Friday’s match, with adults and concessions paying £10.00, while for children aged 12-16 admission will be £4.00, with children aged 11 and under admitted free of charge, though Season Tickets are NOT valid for this meeting

“With the main team unable to ride due to it being World Cup week, we have taken the opportunity to put on something a bit different for the fans,” said Somerset team manager Garry May, “we ran a similar type of meeting to this last season, which was well received by those who attended it, and I am sure that Friday night’s encounter will be another enjoyable evening of speedway, especially with some of the bright new talent coming through the ranks taking part.”
